Kete jave ne vitin 1998,STS-88 u ul ne Qendren Hapesinore Kenedi te NASA-s, pas nje misioni 11-ditor qe mbajti modulin e pare amerikan te ndertuar– per te filluar ndertimin e Stacionit Nderkombetar te Hapesires. Ketu, astronautet Jerry Ross dhe James Newman punojne se bashku ne ecjen hapesinore te fundit te misionit per te lidhur modulin amerikan me ate Ruse. Keto dy pjese te stacionin te hapesires nuk kishin qene ne te njejten hemisferen, por ata ishin ciftezuar se bashku ne menyre te perkryer. Moduli amerikan u ndertua ne Qendren e Fluturimeve Hapesinore Marshall te NASA-s. Stacionin e hapesires eshte nje plan bashkepunues global per avancime shkencore, nje destinacion per rritjen nje tregu komercial ne orbiten e ulet te tokes. Laboratori orbital eshte trampoline per nje hap tjeter te madh te NASA-s ne eksplorimin hapesinore, duke perfshire misionet e ardhshme ne nje asteroid si dhe udhetimin ne Mars.
